[Volundr] 3D Design workshop

Mon, 2019-10-07 09:00 to 12:00

The 3D-printer of Thor has been running for more than a year now. Students of the department can use the printer for their courses and projects for a small cost to compensate the materials used. Volundr will host another 3D-design workshop using OpenSCAD, which is script based 3D design software. OpenSCAD is free and available on many platforms. During this workshop you will design your very own case for the NodeMCU or for the another project and afterwards you can get it printed for free!

[Kvasir] Sioux Lunch lecture

Wed, 2019-10-02 12:40 to 13:20

Electronics in vacuum, how low can you go?

Designing electronics for use in vacuum comes with a special set of requirements.

Dissipation, outgassing, failure rates, contamination, etc. all become critical.

In a recent project, Sioux faced the challenge for such a design.

The target for most specs was (almost) zero, so how low can you go?

About Mark Overdijk, principal system designer electronics:

Mark studied power electronics at the Tue and Fontys. Combined study with a board membership at student union ‘Demos’.

He graduated in 1992 and a few months later started working Sioux CCM in Nuenen. Yes, already for more than 27 years, in various high-tech projects, always challenging and most of all: working together with multiple disciplines.

From the development of power converters (400A, 1600V) for a flywheel system for public transport vehicles to the design for electronics used in vacuum systems for two completely different customers.

A versatile job where you never stop learning. With in-depth knowledge of analog, digital and power electronics Mark his current role at Sioux is principal system designer electronics.

You can sign up for the lecture here or by sending a mail to kvasir@thor.edu (not possible after subscriptions are closed).

Open Wand borrel

Have you always wondered how the other side of the wall looks like? You can get to know this during the first Open Wand borrel of this year!

Heb je altijd al willen weten hoe het aan de andere kant van de muur eruitziet? Komende donderdag kun je het te weten komen tijdens de eerste Open Wand borrel van het jaar!

SportCo Dodgeball tournament

Thu, 2019-09-26 12:35 to 13:20

Course work got you down? Do you miss the simple times of high school dodgeball, where you could let out your frustrations? Well, come join SportCo’s dodgeball event to relive those memories and show us who’s boss! The winner will get a nice prize!

[62] Cantus

Thu, 2019-09-26 07:00 to 12:00

244th GMM day 3

Wed, 2019-09-25 16:00

On Monday September 23th, the 244th General Members Meeting of e.t.s.v. Thor will commence. The meeting will start at 18:00, will take place in Flux 6.154, and will be suspended no later than 23:00. Due to the number of topics on the agenda, we suspect the GMM to continue on Tuesday September 24th in the same place at the same time and on Wednesday 25th September it will also be in Flux starting at 18:00. We aim to address topic 1 to 11 on Monday, topics 12 to 25 on Tuesday and to continue with topic 25 on Wednesday.

We will create a possibility to eat before the GMM. For the details you can come by the Thor Board room (Flux 6.184).

[Kvasir] Prodrive Technologies Lunchlecture

Wed, 2019-09-25 12:30 to 13:20

This lunch lecture discusses a new three-phase rectifier topology, named the Dutch rectifier, which is an AC-to-DC converter that enables a performance breakthrough in terms of system efficiency and especially power density (compactness). It is seen as a high potential candidate for the use in multiple high-performance power products developed at Prodrive Technologies, which need to be supplied with power from the AC mains. Examples of such products are gradient amplifiers for MRI scanners, industrial motor drives and on-board electric vehicle chargers.

Before going in depth, the talk will start with a short company presentation showing the key focus areas of Prodrive Technologies. Thereafter, a general overview of the requirements for three-phase rectifier systems is given, and the history of different topological implementations is briefly discussed in order to provide a basic understanding of the topic area. Then, the operating principle and key features of the Dutch rectifier are introduced and compared against conventional approaches. Experimental results obtained with a recently built hardware demonstrator will be shown, clearly indicating the substantial performance improvement that is made possible by the Dutch rectifier.

You can sign up for the lecture here or by sending a mail to kvasir@thor.edu (not possible after subscriptions are closed).
